I could not agree more — strength training is a great way to protect the knees.
In the past, I have backed off heavy strength work when increasing kilometres with the idea it will keep my legs fresh. However, I would consistently get sore knees that would last for days after anything 10km+.
Now, I keep strength training all the way through and have no issues when running the longer distances (well, longer for me).
This is a great article and very well written.
